Local Growers, Local Solutions at July 31 Sutter County Almond Pest Management Alliance Field Day
Sutter County, Calif., July 12, 2008—The Almond Pest Management Alliance, a collaborative project of almond industry stakeholders aimed at demonstrating reduced risk best management practices in almonds, will present its first field day Thursday July 31 in Sutter County.
The field day will be held at a Pest Management Alliance Demonstration Orchard from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Spilman Ranch near Live Oak. The field day has been approved for 2 Continuing Education credits.
UC Cooperative Extension Farm Advisors Joe Connell, Franz Niederholzer and Carolyn Pickel will present workshops on the regional outlook for Navel Orangeworm in almond orchards as well as strategies to prevent crop damage from this insect. Rich Rosecrance from CSU Chico will present information on the costs and benefits of smart sprayer technology, followed by a smart sprayer field demonstration.
The Almond Pest Management Alliance is a cooperative effort among industry stakeholders including the Almond Board of California, Almond Hullers and Processors Association, Community Alliance with Family Farmers, UC Statewide IPM Program, UC Cooperative Extension, pest control advisors and growers, the California Dept. of Pesticide Regulation and U.S. EPA Region 9. The project works with growers in three regions to establish demonstration orchards that showcase locally effective Best Management Practices to control pests using the latest research and pest control materials.
The field day is open to growers, PCAs and other individuals interested in learning more about almond pest control and the PMA II. Two hours of PCA, CCA and private applicator credits are available.
